How To Use RootX Root Killer

RootX foaming tree root killer is fast and easy to apply with no special equipment required. For severely blocked pipes where mechanical root cutting is also needed, be sure to treat the pipe with RootX root killing foaming herbicide within the first hour after cutting the roots to ensure proper chemical absorption (Note: If root cutting is necessary and you cannot apply within the 1st hour of cutting the roots, wait 6-8 weeks before appling RootX).

Each box or case of RootX jars comes with 12 jars per case. We recommend the use of gloves and a dust mask when handling the RootX chemical. Choose the application method that works best for your location.

RootX Jars

RootX jars offer a convenient method for treating residential sewer pies, service laterals, septic tanks, septic systems, and leach field or drain field systems. The clean-out is the preferred method for most residential applications because the clean-out is closest to the pipes where roots can cause problems. If there’s no clean-out at your location or your customer’s location, you can apply RootX using the toilet. To prevent foam from overflowing the toilet, you should only flush one 2-lb. jar of Root-X foaming herbicide at a time. You can treat through a toilet with more than 2 pounds of RootX (in order to treat more than 50 feet of 4" sewer pipe) but only apply at a rate of 2 pounds per each flush. Repeat application of 2 pounds per flush until you have applied the correct amount of RootX for the length of pipe you are treating for tree root growth. Please refer to our RootX Application Chart for more information.

Applying RootX with the Clean-Out Method

Clean-Out Method

  1. Pour the RootX root killing herbicide and foaming agent directly from the jar into a small pail and mix the two components together (discard the plastic divider). DO NOT add any water to the pail.
  2. Pour the DRY RootX powder into the system cleanout.
  3. Pour 5 gallons of water per pound of RootX used to activate the RootX root-killing foam.
  4. The natural flow of the line carries the foam and root killing herbicide down the pipe.
  5. Restrict water flow for 6-8 hours.

Applying RootX with the Toilet Method

Toilet Method

  1. Pour the RootX aquatic herbicide and foaming agent directly from the jar into a small pail and mix the two components together (discard the plastic divider). DO NOT add any water to the pail.
  2. Pour the DRY mixed RootX powder directly into the toilet. Do not use more than 2 pounds per flush. If more than 2 pounds of RootX is required you can add 2 more pounds directly after the 1st flush and repeat.
  3. Flush the toilet to activate the root-killing foam. Use 5 gallons of water per pound of RootX. Either flush the toilet the correct amount if flushes based on the total gallons per flush (GPF) for your toilet or use a 5 gallon pail of water and slowly pour water into the toilet after flushing the RootX down the toilet.
  4. The natural flow of the line carries the foam and the RootX herbicide down the pipe.

General Application

  1. Pour the RootX aquatic herbicide and foaming agent directly from the jar into a small pail and mix the two components together (discard the plastic divider). DO NOT add any water to the pail.
  2. Pour the DRY RootX product directly into the septic tank or into the clean-out that leads to the septic tank. You can also flush (but you must account for the distance from the toilet to the septic tank.
  3. If you are applying through a clean-out pour 5 gallons of water per pound of RootX root killer used to activate the root-killing foam.
  4. Pour RootX into the distribution box or cleanout to kill roots intruding into drain field lines. Add the correct amount of water to the drain field based on the total feet of leach field pipe. Restrict water for 6 hours.

After a residential application, you should limit water use for at least 6 hours, allowing time for roots to absorb the RootX chemical.

RootX Boxes (General Information)

RootX comes in 40-lb. boxes (only available from RootX) for treating longer lines and service laterals, as well as municipal main lines. For pipes smaller than 8 inches, use the direct pour or vacuum method. For 8-inch and larger pipes, you can also use a foam dispersal unit. With a foam dispersal unit, you can treat more than twice as much pipe using the same amount of RootX.
